Emily Ratajkowski, a regular on the supermodel street style circuit, carries plenty of eye-catching handbags. Now, she’s finally had the opportunity to create her own. After playing muse to The Kooples’s Fall 2017 collection, she was approached by the French label to collaborate on a carryall. The result is the Emily by The Kooples bag, a boxy leather piece with an adjustable strap and glinting gold hardware. “I was looking at all my purses and being realistic about what I really love and what I really wear,” says Ratajkowski by phone. “It came down to combining my favorite-looking purse with my most useful purse.” The bag, which comes in black, taupe, and red, has an undeniable classic, polished shape, one that Ratajkowski had picked up on in her grandmother’s closet. “I used to have my grandmother’s old Dooney & Bourke bags, old Prada bags,” she says. “I think there is something really timeless about that and that is what I love about this.”
True to Ratajkowski’s mission statement, the handbag is more than just arm candy. Key utilitarian features include an accordion-file detail, a stylish remedy for laissez-faire organizational skills (Stars, they’re just like us!). “The funny thing is, I don’t have a wallet, which is really stupid, which is why I love the compartments in one area,” says Ratajkowski, “your lipstick in another, your cash in another, your birth control in another.” Though she carries the medium-size style ($445), the bag is also available in a small ($375) and large ($495) version. (“For the medium, we made and measured it so a laptop fits in it,” she notes).
It’s not the first time the Ratajkowski has tried her hand at design—at least, theoretically. “I was always sketching [as a child],” she says. “When I was 8 years old, I was drawing potential wedding dresses for my teachers in elementary school.” she says. Where the supermodel will carry her fashion smarts next is anyone’s guess.
